IELTS requirements to apply for Ireland Work visas

Some Ireland work visas, such as Critical Skills Employment Permit or General Employment Permit, may require a higher IELTS score of 7.0 or higher in some cases, mainly if the role involves a high level of English proficiency or the employer has specified higher language requirements.

 

There are nine types of Irish employment permits, of which four types of work visas require an IELTS score to prove English proficiency. Those work visas are:

 

Critical Skills Employment Permit (CSEP): The Critical Skills Employment Permit (CSEP) is a type of work permit for skills that are high in-demand. It requires an overall IELTS score band of 6.5 or higher and no applicant below the band score 6.0 can apply for the permit.

 

General Employment Permit: The General Employment Permit is a work permit for highly skilled a worker; which requires an overall IELTS score band of 6.0 or higher. Applicants, who have a score band below 5.0, can’t apply for the visa.

 

Dependant/Partner/Spouse Employment Permit: The Dependant/Partner/Spouse Employment Permit is for spouses who want to work in Ireland which requires an IELTS score between 4.0 and 5.0. Applicant with band score below 4.0 cannot apply for this visa.

 

Sport and Cultural Employment Permit: The Sport and Cultural Employment Permit is for foreign nationals who want to work in sports and cultural activities and work within Ireland's borders. To prove English proficiency, an IELTS score of 6.0 or higher is required.
