Non-EU or third-country nationals must prove their language requirements to work in Austria under certain circumstances. They must demonstrate that they have German language skills to immigrate to Austria.
German Language proficiency is classified through levels by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages:
- Level A: which reflects elementary language skills (primary user)
- Level B: This reflects an independent use of the language (independent user)
- Level C: which reflects a proficient use of the language (proficient user)
Each level is divided into two sub-levels. This also means there are six total levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2. German language skills up to B2 level as it is relevant for immigration and residence in Austria.
Types of German language skills
There are three types to explain German language proficiency:
Basic language skills
- A1-Beginner: This level demonstrates the ability to use and understand familiar everyday expressions and basic phrases and interact verbally but simply.
- A2-Waystage: This level demonstrates the ability to use and understand sentences and expressions related to relevant topics such as personal and family information, shopping, local geography, and employment.
Independent Language ability
- B1-Internediate: The ability to understand the main point’s ideas of the complex test on concrete and abstract topics, including specific discussion in their professional field.
- B2: Upper Intermediate: The ability to grasp the main idea of the complex test on concrete and abstract topics, including specific discussions in their professional field.
Proficient language ability
- C1 Advanced: The ability to express them fluently and spontaneously and can flexible and effective language use in social, academic, and professional situations.
- C2 Mastery: The ability to understand irrespective of the complex word and can read and write German effortlessly.
Visas that need proof of German language proficiency
Non-EU residents or third-country nationals must prove their knowledge of the German language when applying for a residency permit for the first time. Here are the types of visas:
- Red-white-red card plus
- Settlement permit
- Settlement permit except for gainful employment
- Relative- Settlement permit
- Family member
- Artists- Settlement permit
- Settlement permit – exceptional cases of gainful employment
Ways to provide proof of German Language in Austria
The ways to prove the generally recognized language diploma to the Austria government is by pursuing a degree through these universities:
- Austrian German Diploma (→ ÖSD)
- Goethe-Institut e.V.
- Telc GmbH
- Austrian Integration Fund (→ ÖIF)
Exempt from providing the proof of German Language
There are certain exceptions for some individuals. They are:
- Minors (up to 14 years old) during the time of application
- An individual who are owing to physical or mental health
- Family members of specific card won’t require Proof such as:
- Red-White-Red Cardholder
- Highly qualified skilled worker
- EU Blue Card
- Residence permit – researcher
- Long-term resident
- A family member entitled to asylum applying for a Red-white-red card plus
