About Canada Student Direct Stream (SDS)

The IRCC launched the Canada Student Direct Stream (SDS), specifically created to accelerate study permit applications for international students from 14 countries. Candidates can get their applications processed within 20 days via the SDS program.

Announcement: IRCC closes the Student Direct Stream with immediate effect

The Student Direct Stream (SDS) has been discontinued by the IRCC on November 08, 2024. Study permit applications submitted on or after this date would have standard processing times.

Eligibility for Canada SDS

The eligibility criteria to apply for a Canada study permit through (SDS) are given below –

• An acceptance letter from a registered DLI (Designated Learning Institution)
• Proof of tuition fee payment
• Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) worth CAD 10,000.

Requirements for Canada SDS

The requirements for Canada SDS are given below –

• Acceptance letter from an authorized DLI (Designated Learning Institution)
• Medical certificate
• Must be outside Canada at the time of applying.
• Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of CAD 10,000.
• Proof of tuition fee payment for the first year of the study course.
• Criminal clearance certificate
• Evidence of most recent educational qualification
• A minimum IELTS score of 6 or a minimum of 7 in French Test d’Evaluation de Français (TEF).

Processing Time for Canada SDS

The processing time for Canada SDS is 20 calendar days. The ideal time to apply for Canada SDS is 3 months before the Fall Intake.

Canada offers three intakes for students who wish to study in Canada –

Intake 1: September  – Fall intake

Intake 2: January – Winter intake

Intake 3: May – Summer intake

The processing fee for a Canada Student visa under Canada SDS is $150/applicant.

Important update: Canada’s New Trusted Institution Framework

Canada plans to modernize its International Student Program (ISP) by introducing a “Trusted Institution” framework set to be in place by 2024.

Major updates in ISP 2023

1. Two-Tier Structure: Starting in 2024, Canada will establish a two-tiered structure for Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs). Some DLIs will be upgraded to ‘Trusted Institutions.’

2. Fast-Track Visa Processing: If you’re applying to a ‘Trusted Institution,’ expect quicker visa approvals.

3. Focus on Modernization: This move is part of a broader strategy to modernize the entire International Student Program in Canada, addressing various challenges like student vulnerability, application volumes, and diversification.

4. Cap on Int’l Student Numbers: There is an ongoing discussion about possibly limiting the number of international students due to concerns like housing availability.

The Canadian government wants to ensure international students have a quality experience in Canada.
