US Visa rules have created a scarcity of seasonal workers in the nation this spring. There is uncertainty with regards to provisional overseas workers filling seasonal jobs. This is through the H-2B Visa Program.
President of Ogden’s Design & Plantings Judy Ogden
said that she requires 13 workers this year. They
are needed as staff to run crews for my firm. In their absence, I do not have
any workers, explained Ogden. It is almost impossible for Ogden to run her
business in landscape design without workers.
The H-2B Visa is under the non-immigrant program in
the US. It permits employers such as Ogden to hire
overseas workers.
Along with
several other East End business owners, Ogden always applied in advance. This
is to ensure securing the required seasonal workers.
However, the US Visa rules were changed in 2017. The
Government then starting using the system
of the lottery, as quoted by the Fox 5 NY. It has become tougher after this
to guess if the business will get the needed workers.
The signboards ‘Help Wanted’ just illustrate a
fraction of what has become a big issue.
Ogden said that
the seasonal workers arrive in April and exit in December. They arrive lawfully, pay taxes and are
documented with driver’s license, she explained.
The 66,000 cap for 2019 for workers has already been
exhausted. This has been notified by Immigration and Customs Enforcement to
employers across the US. Officials are asking the Secretary of Homeland Security to remove the cap. This is to ensure
that the businesses can sail through the peak season.
US President
Trump’s policies on unlawful immigration are endorsed by Lee Zeldin the US
Congress member. He has also said that these
are documented workers. These jobs are also not being taken up by the US
citizens, he added.
Ogden’s message to the US administration is
that small businesses are getting hurt. We are reliant on seasonal workers and all the Visas must be released, she
adds.
