Highlights: U.S. Citizenship to be issued to 500,000 immigrants
- The U.S. President announced a new plan under which 500,000 immigrants could get U.S. citizenship.
- The White House plans to offer citizenship to spouses of U.S. citizens who do not have a legal status.
- Immigrants who have completed a 10-year legal stay in the U.S. as of June 17, 2024, are eligible to apply.
- Qualifying immigrants will get a temporary work permit and will have 3 years to apply for a US Green Card.
New Citizenship Plan in the U.S.
President Joe Biden recently announced a new citizenship plan offering U.S. citizenship to half a million immigrants. Under the new plan, spouses of U.S. citizens will be eligible to apply for permanent residency and citizenship in the U.S.
The new plan aims to reduce the pressure on thousands of expats living in the U.S. Spouses of U.S. citizens who do not possess a legal residential status will also be eligible to apply under the new citizenship.
Who can apply under the new plan?
To qualify for the new plan, an immigrant must have lived in the U.S. for 10 years as of June 17, 2024, and must be married to a U.S. citizen. Around 50,000 non-citizen children with a parent married to a U.S. citizen can also apply for U.S. citizenship.
Note: Immigrants completing a 10-year stay after June 17, 2024, are ineligible to apply for the program.
Benefits for qualifying immigrants
Immigrants who qualify for the new plan will be granted a temporary work permit and will be shielded from deportation. They will also have three years’ time to apply for a US Green Card.
Note: Applications will begin by the end of summer 2024, and the application fees have yet to be decided.
