The UK is extending the period for which overseas students can stay in the nation with the Study Visas. This is in attempts to enhance the economy in the post-Brexit period by 35 million Pounds.
Overseas
students are permitted to remain in the UK for only 4 months upon completion of
their studies. These rules were launched by Theresa May when she was the UK
Home Secretary.
However, the
post-study leave period will now be extended
to 6 months for Graduate and Post-graduate students. It will be extended up to
1 year for Ph.D. students. The measure also seeks to increase the number of
overseas students in the UK to 600,000 by 2030.
President of
Universities UK Professor Dame Janet Beer welcomed the new approach. It sends a
powerful welcome message to the overseas
students he added.
Overseas
students’ monetary contribution to the UK is huge said the Professor. This is
not just economically but by enriching the overseas education ambiance in UK
Universities as well, he added.
We specifically
welcome measures to improve the regime for Study Visas said Beer. We urge the UK government to take 1 step
further. This opportunity must be extended for minimum 2 years and we will
continue to demand this, he added.
Currently, there are 460,000 overseas students with Study Visas in the UK. These generate 20 billion pounds annually through education exports. This is inclusive of income from overseas students and training for the English language. It also includes solutions in education technology being sold globally.
Damian Hinds the Education Secretary announced the new strategy for overseas students. He was joined by Liam Fox the International Trade Secretary.
It also looks at methods to support overseas students in getting jobs in the
UK.
The reforms are just 1 step away from the move to re-launch the Post-study Work Visa. These had permitted the non-EU students to remain in the UK and work for 2 years upon their graduation.
