The UK
government has announced that the cap on Ph.D. level Work Visas will end. Indians are the largest group among the
beneficiary professionals due to this.
The announcement
was made in the Budget update by Philip
Hammond, the UK Chancellor. It is also known as the yearly Spring
Statement. From later this year, all highly qualified Ph.D. level roles will be
exempt from the cap. This is for arriving in the UK for Work.
Addressing the House of Commons, Hammond said that we
plan to support the UK to remain at the top of the tech revolution. This is transforming the economy of the UK, he
added. The Ph.D. level roles will be fully exempted from the Visa caps from this
autumn. It is to support our ambitious
plans, he explained.
The Ph.D. level
occupations will be exempt from Tier 2
UK General cap from autumn 2019. The government will also revise the
immigration rules for absences of 180 days. This is to ensure that researchers
conducting overseas fieldwork are not penalized. This is if they file an
application to settle in the UK, as quoted by the Business Standard.
Indians received the highest Tier 2 UK Work Visas
under the general category. This is according to the
latest data revealed by the UK Home Office. They accounted for 54% of all the Work Visas offered under
this category in 2018.
Indian citizens
also received the highest increase in grant of Tier 2 Work Visas in 2018. The increase was by 6% or 3, 032 Visas more
in comparison with the last year.
UK Universities
have welcomed the Ph.D. level exemption announced by the UK government. They
