Australian Citizenship has doubled in comparison with the last year as per the Department of Home Affairs. Meanwhile, the wait times have also decreased, added the DHA. The wait times have declined by 10% as per the latest statistics revealed by the Department.
The time period
from filing to the conferral of citizenship has declined for 75% of the applications to 18 months from 20 months.
However, it remains unaltered at 23 months for 90% of the applications.

DHA attributed
the decline in wait times to several reforms executed for streamlining the process. It said that there is no greater
privilege than Citizenship of Australia. We take our responsibility very
seriously to effectively and efficiently process the applications lawfully, it
added.
The number of
individuals who were approved as Australian nationals during July 1, 2018, to
April 30, 2019, is around twice the number approved in the same period in the
previous year.
The Spokesperson
of the DHA said that this is after a range of reforms seeking to streamline the
processes were implemented. This is without
compromising on the program integrity or national security added the
Spokesperson.
The long queue
if individuals waiting for the results for their citizenship application are
still more than 200,000. This is notwithstanding the increase in the number of
approvals and decline in wait times, as quoted by the SBS.
As of 26 May
2019, there were 221, 859 applications
in the backlog as per the Department of Home Affairs. However, it added
that the number of applications in the backlog has reduced significantly in
comparison with 250,000 in the previous
year.
Meanwhile, the
population of Indians in Australia has increased by 30% within the last 2
years. They are now the 3rd largest immigrant group in the nation. The latest
figures by the Australian Bureau of
Statistics reveal that India ranks
3rd on the list of overseas-born residents after the UK and China.
The numbers of
applications in the backlog waiting for a decision are likely to continue to
decline said the DHA Spokesperson. This is due to the high-level focus on the
program for Australian Citizenship, added the Spokesperson.
The numbers of Citizenship by conferral applications with
the DHA are reducing and likely to further decline. This is as a result of the
several initiatives by the DHA. The improvement has occurred even while the number of applications for Australian
Citizenship increased by a record. The number of complex cases has also
increased in the recent years, said the DHA.
