The Department of State in the US has said that the 5-year Tourist Visas for Cubans have been ended. This is a huge blow to the members of divided families in Cuba and the Entrepreneurs. The former would utilize these US Visas to visit relatives. The latter would buy valuable supplies for their businesses in Cuba.
The ending of Tourist Visas cuts
a crucial link between Cuba and the US. It forces the Cubans to make a
complicated and costly trip to a 3rd nation such as Panama or Mexico. This is each time they would like to arrive in
the US. It is because the US has recalled most of its extra Diplomatic
personnel from Havana in 2017 September.
The US has also ceased to offer nearly any kind of Visa in Cuba.
Niuris Higueras said that this
affects all the Cubans. This is especially those
Entrepreneurs who bring products from the US not available in Cuba, she
added. Higueras brings Candles, Hand towels, Salt and other US products for her
restaurant Atelier. It is one of the most successful private eateries in
Havana.
Cubans until now saved cash and
mastered the intricacies of applying successfully for a US Visa in a 3rd
nation. They would obtain the Visa and would not have to reapply for another 5
years. This possibility has ended on March 18, 2019.
The B2 Visa will now offer just a single entry for a stay of 3 months said
Mara Tekach. She is the Charge d’affaires of the US Embassy, as quoted by the Washington Post.
The change was required to bring
about reciprocity amongst the Visa policies of Cuba and the US said Tekach. Cuba offers the US nationals a Tourist Visa
of a single entry for 3 months only, she added.
Nevertheless, the application process for Cuba Visa is a
formality. Travel agencies and Airlines are authorized to offer them to
anyone who seeks them. They are required to pay 50 USD as a part of their
purchase of a travel package or airline ticket.
