The decision on New Zealand Parent Visas will be taken before the term of the Government ends said Iain Lees-Galloway the Immigration Minister. The future of this Visa is still under consideration. It will be improper to remark on it as well as individual cases, he added.

The statement
was made by the Minister in a submission to the select committee on Education and Workforce. This was on a petition filed
by David Barker that urged the Government to end the suspension of New Zealand
Parent Visas.

The previous
Government had frozen this Visa in 2016 October when it was being reviewed. The
present Immigration Minister is yet to
decide its future
, as quoted by the RNZ Co NZ.

Immigration Policy Manager for the Ministry of
Business, Innovation, and Employment Sian Roguski

elaborated on the statistics. The evidence from some sponsors from 2013 reveals
that only 1% had utilized social benefits. This is between 2 and 5 years of
obtaining Residency, added Ms. Roguski.

The review was,
however, unable to establish the impact on public healthcare expenses said Ms.
Roguski. This is owing to hurdles in obtaining complete access to details, she
added. It was also found that certain suspicions
that have been claimed are not supported by evidence
. It is that immigrants
sponsor their parents to reside in New Zealand and themselves go back home,
said the Manager.

97% of those who
began their sponsorship in 2011-2012 are still here said the Immigration Policy
Manager. Meanwhile, 86% of those who began their sponsorship in 2003-3304 are
here itself, she informed. The data does
not support that there are large numbers of stranded individuals on New Zealand
Parent Visas
, added Ms. Roguski.

It is clear that
the Parent Visa is a factor that attracts and retains skilled immigrants said
the Manager. However, it is really tough to quantify its influence, she added.
It is also tough to offer a cost-benefit
assessment of the scheme,
on the whole, said Ms. Roguski.

David Barker was
present at the hearing of the submission in the select committee. He said that
it was heartening to her to what
Immigration New Zealand has said
. This is something that we already know,
said Barker.

The perception
that individuals arriving in their old age will prove to be a cost to the
nation is not true said, Barker. It is clearly
false that individuals are bringing their parents to New Zealand and returning
after abandoning them
, he added.
