Thailand

Some visitors entering Thailand on a tourist visa are being asked by immigration officials at various border checkpoints across the country to show THB20,000 in cash.

Thaivisa says that the tourist visa holders are being subjected to heightened scrutiny, as it is an effort on their part to nab foreigners who posing as tourists may actually be working in Thailand illegally. Even education visa holders are also being scrutinized.

A British national in Hua Hin, who had entered Thailand three times before, was quoted by the online forum as saying that on 17 July that he was asked to show THB20,000 baht at Don Mueang International Airport’s entry point and was asked if he was working in Thailand and how he could support himself during his stay there.

At a local immigration office in Thailand, an immigration officer, who wished not to be named, said that people entering this Southeast Asian county on tourist visas should be able to prove that they can support themselves financially during their stay.
