Yes, health insurance is mandatory during the Netherlands Orientation year, as it requires you to be registered with a Dutch municipality while maintaining legal coverage. Having legal medical insurance is one of the major requirements; in the absence of which, you may receive a fine of €528.00. The type of insurance you choose during the Orientation year depends on your current situation, for example:

  • If you are employed, you can opt for a basic medical insurance policy if you are working in the Netherlands or doing a paid internship.
  • If you are not employed and are looking for employment, you may not be required to obtain an immediate Dutch medical insurance policy if you are currently not working in the Netherlands with a one-year visa. You can continue to use the medical insurance you have in your native country or opt for an international medical insurance policy until you find a new job.

Note: Having a valid form of medical insurance is mandatory.
