1000s of overseas students in the UK are stuck in limbo due to a cheating scandal for an English language test. This occurred 5 years back and they have still been unable to prove themselves of not being guilty. Their UK Visas were cancelled prior to the completion of their courses. As a result, their immigration status is now dubious.
However,
Parliamentarians, Lawyers, and campaigners have demanded a resolution. This is
even as the UK authorities are delaying the issue, as quoted by the University
World News.
A motion has
been tabled in the UK Parliament
this week. It expresses concerns regarding around 35, 870 overseas students
whose UK Visas have been curtailed, revoked, or refused. This is owing to
accusations of cheating on the test for language.
Thousands of
overseas students in the UK have already been deported. UK Council for International Student Affairs termed it as one of
the biggest actions so far against them. The deportations were in response to
the discovery of the deceitful tests for the English language by the Home Office. It was alleged that a few
students made use of proxies in the oral tests for obtaining UK Student Visas.
Meanwhile, it has come to light that some of them
could have been deported wrongly. Others have also said that these were
innocent who never cheated and are stuck in the UK. Most of them do not have
their passports that have been held by the immigration authorities while their
cases are under review. This is has resulted in a never-ending limbo even several years after the first allegations.
Migrant Voice is a charity
campaigning for the affected overseas students and is based in London. Its Director Nazek Ramadan said that it is
atrocious that 1000s of students are still suffering 5 years after the initial
wrongful allegations.
