Overseas Students are now flocking to Stockholm as per the latest report released by STAF - Stockholm Academic Forum. Their numbers have now reached around 10,000 that accounts for roughly 11% of the total student population. It is also a 20% increase in just the last 3 years.
The students
from China are spearheading the
development for the first time. They are followed closely by students from Finland, Germany, and France, as quoted
by the Local SE.
Maria Fogelström Kylberg the CEO of STAF said that there are diverse factors that are responsible for this
development. One among them is the
alumni who return home and spread the word she added.
The survey held
by STAF also attributes this to a mix of democratic
values and culture in Sweden.
Sweden has a
very unique democratic relationship between the teachers and students said STAF
CEO. The equality amongst males and
females is also a strong factor, she added. This is especially taking into
consideration when it is not that obvious in other global areas, said
Fogelström Kylberg.
The other strong
factors that attract overseas students to Stockholm is that majority of them here speak English.
They feel that they can live here actually and will enjoy a nice life quality.
The city has a strong focus on the environment and is sustainable and clean.
The relatively low rate of crime in Sweden
is another attractive factor for overseas students. Security definitely plays a
role said Fogelström Kylberg. Many parents often weigh in on the destination
choice as well and we must not forget this, she added.
Stockholm has a
reputation for being a melting pot of
innovation. It is complete with its thriving Start-up scene and its appeal
is enhancing greatly. Most of the founders of Start-ups in Stockholm have
received their education at the Universities here itself.
