The number of Indian students who were granted visas to study at universities in the United Kingdom has increased by six percent compared to last year.
In the bargain, it was first since 2009 that the number of visas granted by Britain to Indians had registered an increase.
The recent statistics of the UK Government revealed that during the period July-September 2016, 8.692 Tier 4 visas (student visas) were granted to applicants from India as against 8,224 issued during the corresponding period in 2015.
It was also witnessed that sponsored visa applications from Indian nationals to study in the UK rose by five percent in 2016 when compared to 2015, the largest increase since 2013.
The Press Trust of India cited the Times Higher Education which quotes Richard Everitt, British Council India’s director of education, as saying that this spike was a significant milestone.
According to him, the increase could be ascribed to improved relations between the universities of UK and India, improved transparency in the application process of Tier 4 visas and growth in scholarship opportunities.
India is the third largest source market for the UK for overseas student visa applications behind the US and China.
Commenting on this, a British Home Office spokesperson said that their country wanted to beef up the system to support the best universities in order to attract the crème-de-la-crème of talent from all over the world.
