From October 2019 onwards, New Zealand has made the new electronic travel permit mandatory for all visitors to the country.
Visitors from visa-waiver countries must now apply for the NZeTA (New Zealand electronic Travel Authority) at least 72 hours before their journey. This has been confirmed by New Zealand Immigration Authorities.
If you are on a cruise ship and want to go ashore in New Zealand, you will still need to apply for the electronic permit.
International travellers who are on transit through New Zealand will also need the electronic travel permit. However, Australian citizens and Permanent Residents are exempted from the travel permit.
The cost of the NZeTA is NZD 12. If you download it via the Google Play app or the App Store, you may get it cheaper at NZD 9.
The validity of the NZeTA is two years.
Travellers to New Zealand must also note that they also have to pay a “tourist tax” of NZD 35 along with the NZeTA application. The fee is also called the “International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy”. The tourist tax is invested in developing the tourism infrastructure of New Zealand.
