Although many residents of Metro Vancouver left the region to relocate in other areas of British Columbia, the city, home to more than 2.5 million people, has seen its population grow steadily owing to relentless immigration from other nations, the recent data from Statistics Canada revealed.
Released on 13 February, population estimates for StatsCan’s sub-provincial areas, show that despite the fact that Metro Vancouver lost residents to other areas in the state, a total of 31,541 people relocated to Vancouver from other nations in 2016-17.
In fact, only Toronto and Montreal overtook Vancouver with a population growth of 113,074 and 52,158, respectively, in the same year.
But the proportion of immigrants settling in one of these three areas, however, continued to fall in 2016-17. Only 54 percent of the international migrants preferred to settle in Toronto or Vancouver or Montreal compared to 68.5 percent a decade ago.
The Province said that the overseas migration rate across Canada in 2016-17 was 1.2 percent, the highest witnessed in the last 15 years. It made up for 78 percent of aggregate population growth in metropolitan areas, an increase from 75 percent compared to 2015-16.
