The 2019 Canadian Immigration Summit was held in Ottawa the capital of Canada earlier in this month. Here are the major updates from the summit:

The Express Entry system may change after the federal
election

The Federal
Elections in Canada will be held in October this year. Matt de Vlieger Director
General of Strategic Policy and Planning IRCC said that changes can be expected
to the point system of Express Entry after this. A new Government can decide to
modify the system, he added.

Immigration to soon account for all net labour force
growth in Canada

The Conference
Board of Canada published its comprehensive report just prior to the summit. It
was titled ‘Immigration is crucial to the growth strategy of Canada: Can’t go
it alone’. The labour force in Canada would shrink to 18 million in 2040 from
19.8 million in 2018. This is without immigration and betterment in the
participation of groups that are underrepresented. Thus, immigration will be
responsible for all the net growth of labour force in Canada with 3.7 million
workers.

Roughly 60% of all Canadians will be fresh migrants or
the child of a fresh migrant

Nearly 21% of
the population of Canada today consists of naturalized citizens and PR holders.
Add to this the children of immigrants and future immigrants and their
children. The result is that soon an easy majority of the Canadian population
will consist of immigrants and their kids.

PNP allocations have increased by 33% and will go up further
higher

Minister of
Immigration Ahmed Hussen said that PNPs - Provincial Nominee Programs have
succeeded greatly. This is in spreading the advantages of immigration across
Canada and not mere to big cities he added. The allocation of PNPs to select
fresh immigrants will further increase, said the Minister.

“Winners” for the Program Rural and Northern
Immigration to be announced prior to May end

This
announcement was made by the Immigration Minister on the first day of the
Canadian Immigration Summit. Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot was launched
in 2015 as a 5-year initiative. It aims to assess approaches driven by the
community to cater to the needs of labour market in smaller communities. The
winners here refer to communities that have applied for a designated status
through the program. If granted, they will be able to bring in new immigrants
under the program, as quoted by the CIC News.

Canada received 3.2 million visa applications in 2018,
up from 1.9 million in 2015

IRCC has
gradually shifted to online submissions from paper-based applications. It has
permitted more work to be done by the roughly same number of staffs and
quickly. The Express Entry system is a major example and was launched in 2015.

Multi-year Canadian immigration levels plans are here
to stay

The present
Government shifted to the multi-year immigration levels plan in 2017. It covers
a period of 3 years replacing the annual plans. The transition has been overall
a welcome success said Ahmed Hussen. The multi-year immigration levels plan for
Canada will mostly remain, added the Immigration Minister.
