Amber Rudd, the British Home Secretary, has asked the independent Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) to carry out an exhaustive analysis of the role that the EU nationals play in the UK economy and society. The report is expected to come out in September 2018, six months prior to Brexit.
Lancashire Post quotes Babs Murphy, chief executive of the North and Western Lancashire Chamber of Commerce, as saying that they welcomed the decision of the Home Secretary to carry out an intensive and independent analysis to influence their future immigration system’s status. She said that business houses all over Britain are of the view that immigration rules have to be based on an objective view of economic trends and needs, which are assessed better by the MAC experts than by politicians or other analysts.
Murphy added that in future amendments to the UK immigration system should be grounded on proper evidence, employers input and an unequivocal comprehension of the different requirements that each of the regions and the nation face. Though businesses are bound to fill vacancies locally wherever possible, they will need to hire both EU and global workers.
Alan Welsh, the policy manager at the Chamber of Commerce, said that the nationals of
EU and their employers were comforted by the Home Secretary, as it sends clear signals that any major shifts to the rules of immigration for EU citizens would happen in an organised way over time. He said that business houses need proper information to support employees working with them presently, and also as to who they could confidently recruit in the future.
