S Jaishankar, India’s Foreign Minister, has informed that Indians have received between 67% and 72% of all H1Bs issued in the last 5 years. He also said that no significant changes have been made to the US H1B Program as yet.

The US Govt., however, has adopted some administrative measures about the H1B Visa Program. There is increased scrutiny of H1B Visa applications and more documentation is now required. The issue was discussed with Michael Pompeo, US Secy. of State, last week, said Mr Jaishankar.

Here are the statistics of the H1B Visas issued to Indians in recent years:

Year Total H1Bs issued H1Bs issued to Indians
FY 2012 135530 80630
FY 2013 153223 99705
FY 2014 161369 108817
FY 2015 172748 119952
FY 2016 180057 126692
FY 2017 179049 129097
FY 2018 179660 125528

It is clear from the above statistics that between 67% and 72% H1B Visas have been awarded to Indians by the US in the last 5 years. The H1B Visa Program has been instrumental in the movement of skilled Indian professionals, said Mr Jaishankar.

Mr Jaishankar also said that India has closely contacted the US Govt. and the Congress over matters related to the movement of skilled Indian professionals. These included those who were moving to the US on the H1B Visa.

In the discussion with Mr Pompeo, the Indian Govt. has emphasized the need for a mutually-beneficial partnership between the two countries. Indian skilled workers have been instrumental in the growth of the US economy. The US has been able to retain its competitive edge and innovative streak due to talented Indian professionals. The US also values the contribution that Indian skilled professionals have made to the country, as quoted by The Economic Times.

The Trump Govt’s decision to streamline the H1B program has been the point of disagreement between India and the US.
