H1-B Visa

Pramila Jayapal, the Indian origin Democrat US Congress member has said that rushing with changes to the H1-B Visas must be avoided by the Trump administration and cautioned that this must be done through the legislative process rather than an executive order of the President.

Ms. Jayapal is in India currently as a part of the delegation of the US Congress headed by Nancy Pelosi, the leader of the Democratic Party in the US House of Representatives. She also said that there is support for continuing with the H1-B visas cutting across party lines in the US Congress, but with some variations, as quoted by Financial Express.

The US Congress member also added that she is confident of India being prioritized by the Trump led US administration.

Speaking to the IANS for an interview, Ms. Jayapal said that the processing of H1-B visas cannot be halted when several applicants have been waiting for almost three years to get them. Sudden barriers cannot be created to deprive the applicants of the visas, explained Ms. Jayapal.

Any changes to the H1-B visas must be carefully thought over, commented the US Congress member in the backdrop of US President Donald Trump signing an executive order titled ‘Hire American, Buy American’. The executive order intends to bring about several changes to the H1-B visas that include doing away with the existing system of lotteries, eliminating loopholes for fraud in immigration and favoring highly skilled and highly paid workers.

The former activist who strongly supports immigration said that she believes that there is much support for the H1-B visas in the US Congress across cutting across party lines however with some changes though.
