The US passed a Bill yesterday which is aimed at removing the 7% country cap on Green Cards. This move would highly benefit thousands of Indian techies who are currently in the US on H1B Visas.
A Green Card is a
Permanent Residency Card which allows the recipient to permanently live and
work in the US.
The Bill was passed by the US House of Representatives. When
signed into law, this Bill would significantly shorten the agonizing Green Card
wait times for professionals from countries like India.
Every year, the US sees a number of highly skilled Indian IT
professionals move to the US on H1B Visas. These Indian IT professionals are
the worst sufferers of the lot. The
current US immigration system imposes a 7% country cap on the allotment of
Green Cards. This puts the waiting period for some Indian professionals at more
than 70 years.
Removing the country cap would benefit Indian professionals,
some of whom have been waiting for more than a decade for their Green Card.
As per the USCIS, no more than 7% of the total visas may be
issued to natives of one country in a financial year.
As per the CRS (Congressional Research Service), the new
Bill increases the yearly cap on immigrant visas(family-based). From 7% to the
total no. of such visas available in that fiscal year to 15%.
The new Bill also
removes the 7% cap on employment-based immigrant visas, as per The LiveMint.
The new Bill has to be passed by the US Senate before it can
be signed into law by President Donald Trump.
