Overseas immigration has emerged as the chief factor propelling the Australian population growth. The rate of growth in population has expanded since the mid-2000s. Immigration is responsible for 64% of the growth in the Australian population.

Immigrant Population Growth in Australia

The population of Australia has reached 25.09
million in 2019
as per the Australian Bureau of Statistics. This is an
increase from the 21.5 million in 2011 as per the results of the official
census.

Australia is the
6th largest nation in the world. Considering this, it has a very low density of
population at mere 3 individuals for every square kilometre of 7 for every
square mile. This makes Australia one of
the sparsely populated nations in the worl
d, as quoted by the APH Gov AU.

More than 7
million immigrants were staying in Australia in 2018 said Neil Scott Assistant
Director of Migration Statistics at ABS. The statistics reveal that little more
than 29% of the resident population in Australia was born overseas.

Scoot said that
the multicultural society in Australia
consists of immigrants from all nations
in the world. Around 18 million
Australians are however born here. Our society continues to enhance its
cultural diversity with time, he added.

In the year ending June 30, 2018, roughly 526,000 individuals arrived to stay in Australia. Meanwhile, 289,000 left the nation to reside overseas. Of the immigrant arrivals, 62% were Provisional Visa holders. This is inclusive of 30% with Student Visas.

30,000 citizens
of New Zealand arrived to live in Australia in 2018. However, in the same year,
the number of citizens of New Zealand who quit Australia to live overseas was
23,000.

It must be noted
here that the Australian population growth is diverse significantly across the
sub-regions, territories, and States. The cities in Australia have expanded
strongly in general while the expansion in the regional areas has been
assorted. Over the last 10 years,
immigration has especially contributed to the strong growth of population in
Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney.
