H1-B Visa Renewals pilot program now open for Indians
The U.S. state department has revealed the details of pilot program which will allow H-1B visa holders to renew their work permits from within the country. The program is set to begin on January 29, 2024 and has specific guidelines and protocols.
Pilot Program for H-1B visa renewals revealed by the US state department
The program allows a maximum of 20,000 renewals of H-1B visas. Those candidates who obtained their original visas at specified times from the U.S. consulates in Canada and India will be eligible.
This program offers solution to H-1B visa holders who are facing difficulties when traveling overseas. The phased release of application slots aims to accelerate the process so individuals can arrange their travel schedules better.
According to US Immigration and Citizenship Services (USCIS), Indians accounted for 72.6% of the 4.41 lakh H-1B petitions approved in fiscal 2022.

Details of the renewal program
Applicants should have prior H-1B visas issued by Mission India, falling between the dates of February 1, 2021 and September 30, 2021.

Documents required for the renewals
- Properly completed and filled DS-160 form
- Recent photograph
- A valid passport which is valid for six months
- Copies of Form I-797 and Form I-94
Certain candidates may qualify for a waiver
Candidates with prior visa applications and who provided fingerprints may qualify for a waiver of in-person interviews. All the applications must undergo screening and verification.
Majority of applicants who are willing to renew their H-1B visas within a period of 48 months of the expiration of their previous visa will be exempt from in person interview requirement.
