Conference Board of Canada has said that immigrants will be responsible for the total net growth in workers during 2018 and 2040. Immigration is the best way to ensure a high standard of living and economic growth in the nation, it adds. This is along with efforts to enhance the participation of groups that are under-represented d in the labour force, said CBC.
The latest study
by CBC is titled ‘Immigration is Key to
Canada’s Growth Strategy: Can’t Go It Alone’. It considers several labour
force scenarios for the period 2018 to 2040 prior to arriving at its
conclusion.
The CBC study
examined 4 scenarios to overcome the
projected gap of workers in the labour force. The first scenario was
counterfactual and imagined Canada with no immigrants for the next 22 years. In
the next 3 scenarios, the results of the
immigration level of 1% were considered. This is along with enhanced
participation of 3 groups with a chronic and large gap in representation of the
labour force. These are persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples, and
women, as quoted by the CIC News.
The study
concluded that the 4th scenario was the best pathway ahead for Canada. This
combined steady increase in levels of
immigration and increased
participation of the 3 underrepresented groups in the labour force. It
would result in an addition of 5.9 million workers to the labour force.
Immigration at a
yearly rate of 1% of the population of Canada by 2030 remains a formative
solution for overcoming the scarcity of workers, says the study. This will account for all net growth of the labour
force in Canada with 3.7 million workers. It will also be responsible for
1/3rd of economic growth of the nation for the next 20 years.
