Google

Over 1000 Google employees have signed a petition urging their management not to collaborate with U.S. Border Patrol. The Google petition has been circulated inside Google as well as published online on Medium

There are many so-called Googlers that have, in a show of great solidarity with the asylum seekers and refugees, agreed to even make their name and affiliation public. The names of these Google signatories, along with the text of the petition, can be viewed on the official website of Medium

Specifically targeting a potential new contract, Google employees have asked their management not to work alongside the U.S. Border Patrol

The Google employees have been voicing their concerns over the mistreatment of the refugees and asylum seekers in the U.S.

The employees are seeking an assurance that Google will refrain from bidding on a cloud computing contract of the U.S. Government. Referred to as the “Cloud Smart” technology, this cloud computing will be used for enforcing U.S. immigration policies along the border on the south.

Citing the AI Principles upheld by Google, the petition reads that Google will not be involved in building technologies the purpose of which go against the accepted principles of human rights and international law.

The petition further reads, that by any interpretation, the U.S Government agencies like CBP and ICE are in grave violation of the law dealing with international human rights. While CBP stands for Customs and Border Protection, ICE is for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The petition by Google employees categorically states that they “refuse to be complicit”.

Incidentally, Microsoft, Amazon, Oracle, IBM, as well as Google already provide CBP with the current cloud infrastructure.
