German Bundesrat approves streamlined dual citizenship procedures for migrants
The upper house of the German parliament, the Bundesrat, has officially approved to streamline citizenship procedures by offering dual citizenship. With this, Germany's citizenship law is about to undergo a significant revision that will allow foreign nationals to become citizens and maintain both their German and original passports. The new German citizenship law is anticipated to take effect in May of this year.
Foreign nationals can maintain original identity while getting German citizenship
The citizenship law change received formal approval on February 2 following the discussions among delegates from various political parties. Mahmut Özdemir of the SPD emphasized that the new law will finally allow foreign nationals to maintain original identity while attaining German citizenship.
Notably, Thomas Strobl of the CDU voiced opposition, stressing that citizenship should be granted only to those who have demonstrated successful integration into Germany.

Foreign nationals can acquire German citizenship after five years of residency
Applicants for citizenship will be subject to rules under the new law and foreign nationals will now be able to apply for citizenship in Germany after five years of residency instead of eight years. Furthermore, the waiting period will be shortened to just four years for individuals who are married to German nationals.
Additionally, guest workers who arrived in Germany in the 1950s and after will have eased regulations by excluding them from certain tests and focusing on having proficiency in the German language as a requirement for citizenship eligibility.

500,000 people will be getting German citizenship
As per the available data, around 5.3 million individuals residing in Germany may be qualified to get German citizenship. Approximately 500,000 people are anticipated to apply for German citizenship after the new law takes effect.
