A study conducted by the University of Coburg and the Institute for Employment Research has found that Germany is in urgent need of migrant workers. Germany needs at least 260,000 foreign workers every year until 2060 to meet the labour shortage. 146,000 of these workers would need to be hired from non-EU nations.
The
workforce in Germany is estimated to shrink by 1/3rd by 2060 due to
its ageing population. Without immigration, the labour force would go down by
16 million people by 2060.
Germany is currently the 4th
largest economy in the world. Without immigration, the declining workforce
could have a major impact on it.
The study also found that birth rates are
increasing in Germany. There are more women in the workforce than before. Also,
the pension age has increased to 70 years, as per DW.
As per the study, an estimated 114,000
people would migrate to Germany from the EU member states. However, economic
convergence within the member states may reduce the incentive for these workers
to settle in Germany.
As
per official data, only 38,000 foreign workers stayed in Germany in 2017.
The study’s findings were that Germany
should adopt friendly immigration laws as soon as possible. The laws should be
such that they attract high-skilled as well as medium-skilled workers. The
country should also develop a more robust integration program.
