The Danish Government has announced plans to relax the Green Card rules to address its current labor shortage. On 3rd October, it announced a list of 12 countries whose citizens would be able to obtain the Danish work permit more easily.

As per the new reforms, workers from these countries can now qualify for the Danish Green Card despite earning a lower salary. These workers would need to earn 330,000 kroner to qualify as opposed to the earlier requirement of 418,000 kroner. A broader category of workers would now be able to avail this provision. They may also be allowed to commence work while their paperwork is being processed.

This visa reform may be a sign of a shift in the immigration policies of the current Danish Govt. The center-right government led by PM Lars Lokke Rasmussen has been in the news earlier for dissuading foreign workers from moving to Denmark.

Bloomberg quotes Kristian Jensen, Finance Minister, as saying that to ensure a well-functioning welfare state you require enough labor. That is the motive behind the proposed visa reforms.

The new Visa rules would be introduced post approval from the Danish parliament.
