The Temporary Work (Skilled) visa (subclass 457) is now replaced with the Skills in Demand Visa (subclass 482). The Australia Skills in Demand (SID) visa is a temporary visa that allows skilled foreign workers to reside and seek employment in the country for a maximum of 4 years. You cannot directly convert the SID visa into permanent residency; to be able to do so, you must first apply for a permanent visa such as Skilled Migrant Visas (Subclass 189 or 190) and the Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS). In some cases, you may also qualify for permanent residency by applying as the partner of an Australian PR holder or citizen.
