The Canada government considers 30-hour work policy for International students
The Immigration Minister of Canada recently announced and launched various measures to enhance and improve the international student program.
The Immigration Minister, Marc Miller declared that the full-time work policy will be expanded for eligible students till the end of April 2024. Furthermore, IRCC is considering on increasing weekly working hours up to 30 hours for international students.

Full time work policy for International students in Canada
Former Immigration Minister, Sean Fraser, launched a temporary policy that allows students to study while also meeting certain criteria to work over 20 hours a week.
There’s no limit on working hours for international students and that they can work for unlimited hours as long as they maintained their study program requirements.
Study permit applicants meeting certain eligibility criteria are allowed to work full time until 30 April, 2024:
- If IRCC received the study permit application or extension by October 07, 2022 and between October 08, 2022 and December 07, 2023.
You will also be eligible to work off-campus for more than 20 hours a week if any of the following apply to you between November 15, 2022, and April 30, 2024 and between January 1, 2024, and April 30, 2024:
- You are a full-time student with a study permit at a DLI (part-time if it’s last semester).
- You must have kept your status of study permit as a full-time or part-time student enrolled in classes at DLI.
- You have been granted a study permit in Canada but haven’t yet entered the nation (January 1, 2024, and April 30, 2024).
Candidates who have submitted their study permit application or extension after December 7, 2023 will not be eligible to work for more than 20 hours.

Post-graduation work permit and spousal open work permit in Canada
Canada has set a limit on the number of international students annually and is limiting the eligibility for spousal open work permits (SOWPs) and post-graduation work permits (PGWPs) by reducing temporary residents.
The new reforms on increasing the work hours from 20 to 30 for international students will benefit them with the reduction of PGWPs and SOWPs and the international students will be prepared for success.
