Germany's population in 2023
In 2023, Germany's population reached 84.7 million, showing a slight increase of 0.3 million compared to the previous year.
However, the net immigration decreased extremely during this period. According to the estimates given by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the population growth rate aligns with the average observed from 2012 to 2021. Still, it is significantly lower than the figures recorded in 2022. This decline in population growth can be attributed to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, which resulted in a surge in immigration to Germany.
In 2022, the population in Germany experienced a significant surge of 1.1 million, mainly due to major immigration from Ukraine. However, in 2023, population growth depended completely on net immigration, constituting the balance between arrivals and departures.
