IRCC to process visitor visas faster

• Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced to soon begin the processing of a certain visitor visas through its immigration system.
• The plan was implemented after the findings by federal government, led by IRCC, alongside following discussions with various Canadian stakeholders.
• Through this new plan, one of its goals is to improve the service and to reduce waiting times for new immigrants coming to Canada. The particular focus is made on applications of new immigrants who are coming into Canada for major conferences, events and for tourism.

Other steps taken by Canada to aid visitor visa applicants

• IRCC added 13 new countries to its list of partial visa exempt countries, which made a total of 67 countries on the list. Which means, as of June 6th, 2023 travelers from these 67 countries will be eligible to apply for an electronic travel authorization (eTA) instead of a visitor visa.
• The benefit of doing so is that most eTA applications are approved faster than the visitor visas.

Visitor visa applications are increasing in Canada

• IRCC noted that there are many temporary residents entering into the nation, including the visitor visa applications.
• More than 260,000 visitor visas were processed by the immigration department in November 2022 alone.
• Indeed, in the end of 2022, IRCC stated that the country is processing a higher number of visitor visas than those which were made in the past.
• In a news article released on December 19, 2022, the department stated that they are actively working on reducing the backlogs and will be quickly processing visitor visas.
