Frank Lowy the billionaire immigrant has said that Australia must increase the immigration intake. The nation must also have an enhanced generous and ambitious program, he added.
The billionaire immigrant said that Australia is focusing excessively on the issues. It is not highlighting the benefits of immigration, said Lowy. He is a Slovakia born businessman. Lowy’s Westfield shopping empire was sold for 33 billion $ to a French property giant this year.
Turning Australia’s immigration target into a cap for immigration is erroneous, said Frank Lowy. He was delivering the yearly Lowy lecture in Sydney for the Lowy Institute. That curve needs to be bent backward, he added, as quoted by the SBS.
Australia has the right to take measures for preventing illegal immigration said, Lowy. However, the borders of the nation have now been made secure. Thus, Australia can now afford to increase the immigration intake, he added. It must also be generous towards immigrants arriving lawfully, said Lowy.
The Lowy Lecture is an annual feature. It has been delivered in the recent years by several high profile dignitaries. This includes News Corp Chairman Rupert Murdoch, former CIA Director David Petraeus, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
The billionaire businessman also recollected his memories as an immigrant who arrived in Australia in 1952. It was a great feeling as the nation treated him as a future citizen from the beginning, said Lowy.
Giving the current freshly arrived immigrants the same personal stake in Australia is the challenge today, said Frank Lowy. The newly arrived immigrants must be grateful. But what the nation needs is their hard work, not gratitude, he added.
