US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Report

According to the annual progress report released by US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), nearly 8.7 lakh foreign nationals gained US citizenship during the fiscal year 2023. Of this, around 1.1 lakh were from Mexicans, 35,200 newly enlisted American citizens were from the Dominican Republic, and 44,800 were from the Philippines.

People who were given US citizenship in FY 2023 were allowed for naturalisation. As per the USCIS report, a non-citizen will be eligible for naturalisation only after they spend at least 5 years in the US. Also, a US citizen’s spouse must complete at least three years as a lawful permanent resident in the US. In 2023, the average number of years spent as an LPR for naturalised people was seven years.

An individual can apply for US citizenship after getting a US green card for at least five years. For individuals who have married a US citizen, the period is reduced to three years. However, for Indians, the waiting time for a green card takes longer, which disturbs the opportunity to choose US citizenship.
