What is a Portugal Digital Nomad visa?
The Portugal Digital Nomad visa, or the D8 visa, came into effect in October 2022. It is a national Type D visa for remote foreign workers. The visa has dual purposes: Temporary stay and long-term resident permit.
The two types of Portugal Digital nomad visa are as follows:
- Temporary stay visa:
The temporary stay visa allows you to stay in Portugal for 12 months. It can be renewed up to 4 times but is not eligible for extensions.
- Long-term resident visa:
The resident permit allows you to stay in the country for up to two years, which can be renewed for an additional three years. Digital nomads who complete five years in the country can also qualify for permanent residency.

Eligibility Requirements for a Portugal Digital Nomad visa
You must fulfill the eligibility requirements given below to apply for the visa:
- Be 18 years of age
- Be a citizen of non-EU/EEA countries
- Have a permanent or freelance contract for remote work
- Have proof of all the income sources
- Proof of accommodation (a minimum of 12 months of rental agreement or property lease)
