Canada’s new LMIA-exempt Work Permit

In a recent announcement, The Canadian government has introduced a new LMIA-exempt work permit for eight tech firms in the country. The new work permit is a part of the Innovation stream under the International Mobility Program (IMP) which was launched in 2023.

 

Canadian employers who have taken part in the Global Hypergrowth Project can hire eligible foreign worker without the requirement of Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). Skilled foreign workers with a job offer from these employers can obtain an employer specific work permit.

 

The eight selected companies have been identified as industry leads with the potential of bringing innovation. Selected foreign workers recruited by these companies can get an LMIA-exempt work permit.

Selected tech companies for the LMIA-exempt work permit in Canada

The following is the list of companies selected for the new LMIA-exempt work permit in Canada:

 

  • Ada Support Inc.
  • AlayaCare
  • CellCarta
  • Clarius Mobile Health
  • Clio
  • Duchesnay Pharmaceutical Group (DPG)
  • Lightspeed Commerce
  • Vive Crop Protection

 

Who is eligible for the new LMIA-Exempt work permit?

You would be eligible for the new LMIA-exempt work permit under the Innovation stream if you:

 

  • Get a job offer from an employer taking part in the Global Hypergrowth Project(GHP)
  • Have an employment offer in a high skilled occupation including job roles listed under the NOC TEER Categories 0,1, 2 or 3
  • Have relevant education and work experience as mentioned in the job requirements of the occupation you willing to take up

 

Candidates living both outside and inside Canada can apply for this work permit. Applicants whose job role is listed under NOC TEER 0 or 1 can qualify for faster processing time.

 

Employers must ensure the following before the candidate applies for the innovation stream:

 

  • The employer must provide an employment offer and an employment number
  • The employer must pay an employer compliance fee of CAD 230
